"Listen to the patient" - Paula Leslie

Additional Information
Additionally to the topics of interest listed, further topics of interest are patient will, pleasure feeding and end of life decisions. I believe that our role as clinicians is to understand patient wishes and help patients to achieve those wishes. It is not our role to forbid patients to eat or drink in a certain manner but to find ways (through specific diagnostic based therapy) to facilitate patients to accomplish their goals for a better quality of life.

Additional Information
By having had steps in different disciplines in my career (Masters degree in SLT and a second Masters degree in phonetics, 3 years of work in neuropsychology during my studies, 3 years in acute hospital with focus in critical care, oto-rhino-laryngology, internistic med. and also a stroke unit, 3 years in care for in-house dementia-patients in a hospital, and more than 8 years in Neurologic rehab) I gained a very interdisciplinary thinking in diagnostics, therapy and daily working routine. I try to bring this knowledge to other SLTs and other professions during my work in my hospital but also by teaching (7 years of "tracheostomy-teaching" for SLTs at LMU Munich, many seminars of different length for nursing Staff and also seminars for MD). My focus in mentoring is not only transmitting knowledge but also helping in overcoming barriers between fields.
