ESSD Winter School

2024 Winter School - Leuven, Belgium

ESSD is pleased to offer a FEES and VFSS course for its 2024 Winter School on 8 & 9 February.

  • Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing - FEES Course by Laura Baijens, Björn Degen, Tobias Warnecke & Rainer Dziewas
  • From Diagnostic to Treatment: Frame-by-Frame - VFSS Course by Petra Pluschinski & Stefanie Duchac

More information and registration below.

Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is one of the most commonly chosen methods for the objective assessment of swallowing. Today, FEES has been successfully applied to diverse patient populations and disease patterns. The aims of FEES are to identify pathological movement patterns, assess the effectiveness and safety of swallowing, determine suitable food consistencies or forms of nutrition and guide the use of therapeutic manoeuvres for each patient.

From Diagnostic to Treatment: Frame-by-Frame

A Deep Dive into Videofluoroscopy of Swallowing

Petra Pluschinski & Stefanie Duchac

"Although I have been using and interpreting FEES for many years, it was only after the introduction of Videofluoroscopy of Swallowing (VFSS) that I truly understood swallowing" says Petra Pluschinski. This statement underscores the essential role of VFSS in dysphagia management and therapy planning.

Course Overview: This 2-day course invites you to explore all speech therapy-relevant aspects of Videofluoroscopy of Swallowing (VFSS) and its integration into dysphagia management. We will cover various aspects of VFSS, from the fundamentals, like radiation protection and technical considerations, to the essential speech therapy tasks during the online management (including contrast agents, consistencies, and compensatory strategies) and offline management including frame-by-frame analysis and setting therapy goals.

You will learn relevant swallowing biomechanics in normal swallowing through engaging video sequences. Furthermore, we will delve into real case examples from dysphagic patients with different causes, such as neurogenic dysphagia or dysphagia in head and neck cancer, and engage in interactive discussions.

This seminar is designed not only for dysphagia professionals who already have access to VFSS but also for those seeking a deeper understanding of swallowing mechanisms. It caters to therapists looking implement VFSS or those actively conducting VFSS examinations.

What you will learn: By the end of this seminar, you will be equipped to:

  1. Recognize the pivotal role of VFSS in dysphagia management and its significance in therapy planning.
  2. Understand the technical and safety aspects of VFSS, including radiation protection.
  3. Apply speech therapy interventions during the online management phase of VFSS, taking into account patient positioning, contrast agents, consistencies, and compensatory strategies.
  4. Know different protocols and analyze VFSS results frame-by-frame and derive treatment goals for post-examination management.
  5. Identify dysphagic aspects in various etiologies, and engage in interactive discussions regarding treatment approaches.

Join us for a comprehensive exploration that will enhance your dysphagia skills and deepen your understanding of swallowing, frame by frame.

She holds the FEES trainer certificate from the DSG and ESSD. Her extensive experience includes working in geriatric and neurological settings, where she focuses on diagnosing and treating neurogenic speech and language disorders and various types of dysphagia. She has been a research assistant at Frankfurt University Hospital and Marburg University Hospital and maintains a network of national and international relationships within the field of dysphagiology. As a freelance lecturer, she has conducted workshops on the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia and has numerous publications in national and international journals.

Stefanie Duchac is a Professor of Speech Therapy at SRH University of Applied Sciences, Karlsruhe Campus in Germany, starting in 2019. She holds a doctorate earned in 2016, she has significant clinical-scientific experience as a speech therapist, with a special focus on dysphagia in neurogenic population and after cervical spine surgery. Since 2019, she has been an elected board member of the European Society for Swallowing Disorders (ESSD). Stefanie is the driving force behind the dysphagia mentorship program in Germany and a co-founder of the first German-language podcast dedicated to swallowing disorders. She frequently conducts seminars and workshops, primarily in the field of evidence based dysphagia management and videofluoroscopy of swallowing, and co-authored among others a textbook about VFSS in german language.
